He built the export business first

Imtiaz Rastgar began his business career in 1967, founding Rastgar Engineering Co. from scratch. What started as a metal casting venture — built through practical training at PITAC and sustained by relentless attention to quality — became, over six decades, one of Pakistan’s most internationally recognised manufacturers.
Today, Rastgar Engineering Co. (rastgar.com) is a world-class manufacturer and exporter of ductile iron wheel hubs and wheel-end components for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, serving more than 70 countries. Three generations of the Rastgar family now manage its operations.
In 1980, he founded his second flagship, Rastgar & Co (rastgar-co.com) — an air engineering house that worked with leading German manufacturers for over four decades as Pakistan’s distributor for CompAir, Boge and Alup compressors, before developing its own brand: SKY Air Compressors (skyair-compressors.com).
In all, he has founded 11 companies across industrial equipment, air engineering, pneumatics and entrepreneurship development — including AirAudit, Sakoon Pneumatics, AirPro Technix, MedAir, and the Potohar Centre for Entrepreneurship Development.

1967

Founds Rastgar Engineering Co.

Starts a metal casting venture from scratch that grows into one of Pakistan's largest exporters of automotive components — today exporting to 70+ countries and supplying OEMs including Toyota, Hino, Mercedes, Volvo and Scania. www.rastgar.com

Founds Rastgar & Co

Builds an air engineering business in partnership with leading German manufacturers — representing CompAir, Boge and Alup in Pakistan for over four decades — which has now launched its own brand, SKY Air Compressors. rastgar-co.com · skyair-compressors.com

2004 – 2007

Head, Engineering Development Board (EDB), Pakistan

The first private-sector professional in Pakistan's history to head a government body on an honorary basis. Under his leadership, EDB was transformed from an administrative body into a dynamic export and industrial development engine.

  • Formulated Pakistan's first-ever Automotive Industry Development Program (AIDP 2007–2011)
  • Deregulated the motorcycle sector — output grew from 450,000 units (2005) to 2.2 million (2008), prices fell from PKR 75,000 to PKR 35,000
  • Led 150+ Pakistani engineering companies to Hannover Messe, Germany across three successive years — 50+ subsequently entered European export markets
  • Created the Pakistan Trade Corridor Trucking Policy with all stakeholders
  • Organised roadshows at Bochum and Rotterdam Chambers of Commerce and the Metaalunie
  • Initiated the Export Coaching Programme together with CBI Netherlands
2007 – 2017

Senior Trainer, CBI Netherlands — Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Immediately on leaving EDB, invited by the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries as Engineering Sector Expert and Senior Trainer. Over 10 years, he trained more than 50 Pakistani manufacturers for European market entry and delivered the CBI Export Coaching Methodology to participants from Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Morocco, Egypt, and the Philippines — one of the few Pakistani practitioners with a truly multi-country training footprint.
